Brentwood, CA
Brentwood is a growing, attractive city situated in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area within Contra Costa County, California. The city has experienced remarkable population growth, increasing by 287% between the 2000 census and the 2022 estimate of 66,854 residents. Brentwood is a highly residential community known for its comfortable suburban developments.1
The city’s modern development began with John Marsh, who acquired the Rancho in 1837. Marsh was a key figure in California’s journey to becoming part of the United States, and his letters, published nationally, encouraged the first wagon trains to the state, making Rancho Los Méganos the terminus of the California Trail. The city itself was named after Marsh’s ancestral home, the town of Brentwood in Essex, England. Brentwood established its first post office in 1878 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1948.
Although much of the land has been developed into modern homes, the city is still well-known throughout the Bay Area for its agricultural products, primarily its flavorful cherries, corn, and peaches. This agricultural heritage is preserved by the Contra Costa County Agricultural Core, which borders the city on three sides with 11,000 acres of actively productive farmland.
Brentwood operates under the City Manager form of government, ensuring professional management of city departments including Community Development, Parks and Recreation, and Public Works. Key services are provided by the Brentwood Police Department and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CCCFPD).
The city has invested significantly in its civic infrastructure, exemplified by the $60 million civic center project completed in 2012. This impressive development includes a new 58,000-square-foot City Hall and a 32,000-square-foot community center featuring arts, crafts, and studios for community dance and exercise programs. The project earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification for its sustainable amenities, such as green roofs and permeable paving. Retail growth has been strong, with major centers like Lone Tree Plaza and The Streets of Brentwood offering a variety of shopping and lifestyle experiences. The city’s economy is displaying strong vigor, with new residential and commercial construction contributing to revival, partially fueled by close relations with federal research facilities like the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.
Brentwood is served by the Brentwood Union School District and the Liberty Union High School District, which are known for their quality. Several schools in the district have been designated as a California Distinguished School. Heritage High School, for instance, offers a full range of Advanced Placement courses, championship athletic teams, and boasts the highest Academic Performance Index (API) score in the area. Education is also supported by the presence of a Los Medanos College satellite facility, which is expanding to a new 18-acre campus. The community benefits from the new 20,000-square-foot Brentwood branch library, completed in 2018, which offers extensive resources in both English and Spanish.
With a current population estimate of 67,202and an average household size of approximately 3.05 people, Brentwood is a family-oriented community. The median household income is notably high at $142,494, with a low poverty rate of 8.35%. The city is committed to promoting health and fitness, having been designated a Playful City USA for multiple consecutive years. It offers a variety of parks, miles of scenic jogging trails, and active athletic programs. The visual and performing arts are also thriving, supported by the Brentwood Art Society, which sponsors events like the annual Art, Wine, and Jazz Festival. The city offers a unique blend of suburban comfort, robust services, and a commitment to quality of life.
