Antioch, CA

Antioch is the third-most populous city in Contra Costa County, California, located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city sits along the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta and the San Joaquin River, giving it a strong connection to regional waterways and transportation routes. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Antioch had a population of 115,291. Over the past several decades, the city has experienced steady growth and has become increasingly diverse.

Early History

Antioch is one of the oldest communities in the region. The area was originally part of Rancho Los Méganos, a large land grant given to Californio ranchero Don José Noriega in 1835. In 1848, John Marsh, the owner of the ranch, built a shipping landing on the San Joaquin River that became known as Marsh’s Landing. The site served as a transportation hub where agricultural goods and livestock from the surrounding ranchlands were shipped along the river.

In 1849, two ministers from Boston, Rev. William Wiggins Smith and Rev. Joseph Horton Smith, purchased land nearby and established a town west of Marsh’s Landing called Smith’s Landing. During a town gathering on July 4, 1851, residents agreed to rename the town Antioch after the biblical city. The Antioch Post Office opened shortly afterward, and the city was officially incorporated in 1872.

Economic Development

During the late 1800s, Antioch’s early economy expanded beyond agriculture. Coal was discovered in nearby hills in the late 1850s, leading to the development of coal mining operations that supported the region’s economy for several decades. Small towns and mining communities formed around the area, increasing economic activity.

In the 1860s, copper deposits were discovered near Antioch, leading to a short-lived mining boom. Petroleum drilling was also attempted in the region, although oil production was not successful. Over time, transportation routes and shipping continued to support Antioch’s local economy.

The city also had a historic Chinese community during the late 19th century. However, discriminatory laws and violence led to the destruction of Antioch’s Chinatown in 1876, and Chinese residents were forced to leave the area for many decades. In recent years, the city has acknowledged this part of its history and has taken steps to recognize and preserve the cultural heritage of the community.

Modern Growth

During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Antioch developed into a residential community connected to the larger Bay Area economy. Many residents commute to nearby cities such as Oakland and San Francisco for work. As housing costs increased across the Bay Area, Antioch experienced population growth as families moved farther inland.

Infrastructure improvements have strengthened Antioch’s connection to the region. In 2018, a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station opened in the city, providing expanded transportation access for commuters traveling throughout the Bay Area. The Gateway Generating Station, a natural gas power plant that began operation in 2009, also became an important energy facility serving the region.

Geography and Climate

Antioch covers approximately 30 square miles and sits along the western edge of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Its location between the Central Valley and the Bay Area influences its climate. The city experiences a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall. Summer temperatures are typically warmer than those in coastal Bay Area cities, though nearby waterways provide some cooling influence.

Population and Community

Antioch’s population has grown steadily over the past century, increasing from fewer than 1,000 residents in the early 1900s to more than 115,000 today. The city is known for its cultural diversity. As of the 2020 census, Antioch’s population included a mix of racial and ethnic groups, with Hispanic or Latino residents representing about 36 percent of the population.

The city has more than 35,000 households, with an average household size of just over three people. The median age is approximately 36 years. Antioch also has a large number of foreign-born residents, contributing to the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

Economy and Culture

Antioch’s economy includes healthcare, education, retail, and government employment. Major employers in the city include Kaiser Permanente, Antioch Unified School District, and Sutter Delta Medical Center.

The city also maintains an active arts and cultural scene. Historic landmarks include the El Campanil Theatre, which opened in 1928 and continues to host live performances, concerts, and community events. The Antioch Historical Society Museum and the Rivertown Art Center also highlight the city’s cultural heritage and support local artists.

Parks and Natural Areas

Antioch offers a large network of parks and open spaces. The city maintains more than 30 parks and several hundred acres of preserved land. Nearby natural areas include Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve and the Antioch/Oakley Regional Shoreline.

The Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is also located within the city and protects endangered plant and insect species native to the region. Today, Antioch remains an important residential and economic center in Contra Costa County, known for its waterfront location, growing population, and connection to the broader San Francisco Bay Area.

We had arsenic in our well water and knew we needed a reliable solution, and AAA Water Systems delivered exactly that.

Initially, their employee, Belmin, came out to explain our options for filtering out the arsenic and made sure we understood how the system would address the arsenic issue specifically. He was friendly, professional and knowledgeable.

When we decided to go with AAA Water Systems, Chris Rubalcaba did a fantastic job of installing a full water softener and water filtration system. The installation process was smooth, efficient, and done with great attention to detail. Chris took a lot of time to explain how things worked, when filters needed to be changed, and how to troubleshoot anything that might go wrong. He answered our questions and helped us feel confident in using the full system.

Since having the system installed, we’ve noticed a huge improvement in our water quality. Most importantly, we have peace of mind knowing the arsenic is being properly filtered out. The water tastes better, feels better, and we feel much more confident using it every day.

If you’re dealing with well water issues or need a dependable filtration system, I would absolutely recommend AAA Water Systems—and especially Belmin and Chris—for their expertise, professionalism, and quality work.

Huge thanks to Chris Rubalcaba at AAA Water System for a flawless installation today. His professionalism and expertise were obvious from the start, and he took the time to explain the system in a way that was easy to understand. It’s rare to find a technician who combines skill, patience, and great customer service — Chris delivered all three. I couldn’t be happier with the experience.
