Clayton, CA

Clayton is a small suburban city in eastern Contra Costa County, California, at the base of Mount Diablo, about 3.8 square miles in size and entirely land. Incorporated in 1964, it had a population of 11,070 in 2020, with a relatively high density of around 2,883 residents per square mile. The city sits at an elevation of about 390 feet, uses ZIP code 94517, and is part of the 925 area code region.

A Look at Clayton’s History

The community traces its roots to 1857, when Joel Henry Clayton and his brothers laid out the town at the foot of Mount Diablo. Clayton, an immigrant from what is now Buxworth in the United Kingdom, co-founded the town with Charles Rhine. A coin toss decided the name, favoring “Clayton” over “Rhinesville.” The town prospered during the coal mining boom in eastern Contra Costa County, and a post office was established in 1861. After an initial failed attempt at incorporation in 1960, residents successfully incorporated in 1964 to resist annexation efforts by nearby Concord. Through annexations in the 1970s and 1980s, including the Dana Hills/Dana Ridge and Clayton Wood areas and the Oakhurst Country Club development, the city expanded to near its current boundaries.
Clayton, California

Clayton’s location at the foot of Mount Diablo shapes both its scenery and its fire risk. The city sits in a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Historical records show very hot summer highs that can reach well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter lows can dip below freezing. Average annual precipitation is about 20 inches, heavily concentrated in the cooler months, with virtually no rain in mid-summer. Snow is very rare but did fall in Clayton and nearby Concord in December 2009, the first such event since the 1970s.

The surrounding hills and wildland areas have contributed to several notable wildfires in recent years. In September 2013, the Morgan Fire started near Morgan Territory Road on Mount Diablo, quickly threatening homes and livestock. Evacuations were ordered in nearby areas, and more than 1,000 firefighters and multiple aircraft were deployed; the fire burned about 3,100 acres before full containment was achieved on September 14. Another vegetation fire in July 2018 along Marsh Creek Road destroyed one home and three outbuildings, again prompting evacuations. In August 2020, lightning storms sparked many fires across California, including another Morgan-area fire that became part of the larger SCU Lightning Complex.

Growth and Industry

Demographically, Clayton has grown steadily from a small community of 1,385 residents in 1970 to over 11,000 by 2020, with most of that growth occurring between 1970 and 2000 as suburban development expanded. The 2020 census shows an age profile skewing older, with a median age of about 48.6 years. Roughly 20.6% of residents are under 18, while more than half are 45 or older and about 22.2% are 65 or above. The population is predominantly White (about 73.6%), with Asians making up around 9.4%, people of two or more races about 12.5%, and Hispanics or Latinos of any race about 11.2%.

There were 4,089 households in 2020, with an average size of 2.70 people. About 31.9% of households had children under 18, and nearly 69% were married-couple households. Around 17.6% of all households consisted of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 or older, reflecting the city’s sizable senior population. The housing stock included 4,165 units, with a very low overall vacancy rate of 1.8%; most residents live in urban-classified areas, underscoring Clayton’s suburban character despite its proximity to open space.

Population and Community

Recent survey data indicate that Clayton is relatively affluent and well educated. An estimated 14.1% of residents are foreign-born, and about 85.8% of people aged five or older speak only English at home, with small percentages speaking Spanish, other Indo-European languages, or Asian and Pacific Island languages. Among adults 25 and older, about 98.5% are high school graduates and 58.8% hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The median household income is high, around $172,226, with a per capita income of about $73,228. Only a small share of residents live below the poverty line, roughly 1.4% of families and 2.2% of the total population.

Clayton’s public schools are part of the Mount Diablo Unified School District. Local K–12 students attend Mt. Diablo Elementary and Highlands Elementary for early grades, Diablo View and Pine Hollow Middle Schools for intermediate grades, and Clayton Valley Charter High School for secondary education. The city also hosts a branch of the Contra Costa County Library system, providing local access to library services.
